As many of you know on April 25, 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit Nepal – the largest earthquake in the area in over 80 years.
Guro Brett is currently in Nepal, volunteering with Global Medic, a registered charity whose mission is to provide emergency relief to people all over the world affected by natural disasters and other emergencies. They aim to empower the people in the global communities they serve by providing equipment and training for emergency medical care, rescues and water purification.
We have recently received an update from Guro Brett, who with his team has been packing relief kits to take to villages that were flattened by the quake, as well as distributing and teaching the use of water filtration systems. He says it is amazing to see people standing, working in the rubble of their homes – their entire village most of the time – and yet still smiling and still welcoming as they come through.
An estimated half a million homes have been destroyed be the earthquake and while the devastation now is bad, the monsoon season is just weeks away and things will escalate dramatically. Apart from making things much more difficult and dangerous logistically, illness spreads unbelievably fast during the rainy season and the Nepalese desperately need shelter for the rains to come. If you are able, please consider a donation to help get shelters out to these areas- go to www.globalfire.ca to find out how to donate.
