Kathara Society Community Project

Empowerment Through the Legacy of LAPU-LAPU. — On Unceded Coast Salish Territory. — April 2015

This event is a historical re-enactment of the Battle of Mactan commemorating pre-colonial Philippine hero LAPU-LAPU who symbolically defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in from taking over the land, culture, beliefs, and practices of the people. The event took place in the archipelago now known as the Philippines in April 27, 1521.

Today, like LAPU-LAPU, Kathara and our communities stand together as a community, to address the threat and destruction that mining and oil corporations have on our future, and our children’s future. Our goal is to celebrate a Filipino hero, annually acknowledge our values, our struggles, our fight, and celebrate our kinship in the spirit of LAPU-LAPU.

On Wednesday April 29 @ Heartwood Cafe, we will present the filming of the Battle and history of LAPU-LAPU. We will also showcase talks on Warrior Arts, Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), and ancient art of Tattooing.
