The\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Philippine Trench\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippine_Trench\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Philippine Trench<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0(also called the Mindanao Trench) is a\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Submarine trench\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Submarine_trench\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">submarine trench<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a01,320 kilometers (820\u00a0mi) in length found directly east of the Philippine Mobile Belt and is the result of a collision of tectonic plates. The Philippine Sea Plate is\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Subducting\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subducting\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">subducting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0under the Philippine Mobile Belt at the rate of about 16 centimeters (6.3\u00a0in) per year. Its deepest point, the Galathea Depth, has a depth of 10,540 meters (34,580\u00a0ft). The\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Philippine Fault System\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippine_Fault_System\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Philippine Fault System<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">consists of a series of seismic\u00a0faults<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0that produce several\u00a0earthquakes<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0per year, most of which are not felt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maelstromcore.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/270px-Ph_physical_map.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3549\" alt=\"270px-Ph_physical_map\" src=\"http:\/\/maelstromcore.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/270px-Ph_physical_map.png\" width=\"270\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/maelstromcore.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/270px-Ph_physical_map.png 270w, https:\/\/maelstromcore.com\/sandbox\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/270px-Ph_physical_map-191x300.png 191w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Many volcanoes in the country are active, the most recent eruption being that of\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Mount Pinatubo\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Pinatubo\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mount Pinatubo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0on Luzon in 1991.\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Mount Mayon\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Mayon\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Mount Mayon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0is another of the active volcanoes and has the world&#8217;s most perfectly-shaped cone. Mayon has a violent history of 47 eruptions since 1616 and another violent eruption is currently feared.\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Taal Volcano\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taal_Volcano\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Taal Volcano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, also located on Luzon, is one of the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Decade Volcanoes\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Decade_Volcanoes\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Decade Volcanoes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The islands typically have narrow coastal plains and numerous swift-running streams. Every island has sand beaches, but few open onto spacious lowlands. There are few large plains or navigable rivers. The longest river is the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Cagayan River\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cagayan_River\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Cagayan River<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0or Rio Grande de Cagayan in northern Luzon measuring 354 kilometers. In Mindanao, the longest river is the\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Rio Grande de Mindanao\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rio_Grande_de_Mindanao\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Rio Grande de Mindanao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0or Mindanao River which drains\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Maguindanao\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maguindanao\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maguindanao<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0and other parts in western-central Mindanao.\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Agusan River\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agusan_River\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Agusan River<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0drains eastern Mindanao.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Eco-regions of the Philippines<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Philippines\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippines\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Philippine<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Archipelago\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Archipelago\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">archipelago<\/span><\/a><\/span>\u00a0is one of the world&#8217;s great reservoirs of\u00a0<a title=\"Biodiversity\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biodiversity\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">biodiversity<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Endemic (ecology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endemic_(ecology)\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">endemism<\/span><\/a>. Most of the Malesian flora is derived from tropical Asia, including the\u00a0<a title=\"Dipterocarp\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dipterocarp\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">dipterocarps<\/span><\/a>, which are the characteristic tree of the Philippine forests. Elements of the\u00a0<a title=\"Antarctic flora\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antarctic_flora\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Antarctic flora<\/span><\/a>, which originated in the ancient\u00a0<a title=\"Southern hemisphere\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_hemisphere\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">southern hemisphere<\/span><\/a>\u00a0supercontinent of\u00a0<a title=\"Gondwana\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gondwana\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Gondwana<\/span><\/a>, are also present, including ancient conifers like\u00a0<a title=\"Podocarpaceae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Podocarpaceae\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">podocarps<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(<i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a title=\"Podocarpus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Podocarpus\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Podocarpus<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Nageia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nageia\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Na<wbr \/>geia<\/span><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0<a title=\"Sundacarpus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sundacarpus\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sundacarpus<\/span><\/a><\/i>) and\u00a0<a title=\"Araucariaceae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Araucariaceae\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">araucarias<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The\u00a0<a title=\"Ecoregions\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecoregions\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">ecoregions<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of the Philippines are defined primarily by the sea levels during the Ice Ages, which were 120 meters lower than at present, as billions of gallons of water were locked away in huge continental ice sheets.
