Tinikling

Meaning; tikling-like, tikling being a generic term for birds from the family Rallidae.

Tinikling is a folk dance that also comes up in training Filipino Martial Arts. The dance takes place in and around two long bamboo poles that are held by people on either end and hit together in a synchronized fashion to create a sustained rhythm. As the dancers move back and forth over the poles the rhythm speeds up, going faster and faster, picking up the dancers pace, testing their balance and ability to be light on their feet. The dance imitates the tikling birds movements as they gracefully run over land, fallen sticks and logs, evading farmers traps.

The sure footed speed and timing required for this dance is an asset when it comes to martial arts as well. Demos can be found of martial artists dancing the tinikling dance with their feet while practising siniwalli patterns with their hands.
